Overview

UV sterilizers disinfect water by exposing it to 254 nm ultraviolet radiation, which damages the DNA/RNA of bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, rendering them unable to reproduce. Unlike chlorine disinfection, UV leaves no chemical residuals, does not form disinfection by-products (DBPs), and does not alter taste or odor. UV is the disinfection method of choice for bottled water, beverage production, pharmaceutical water, and any application where chemical-free treatment is required.

Engineering Features

☀️

Low-Pressure Amalgam Lamps

Amalgam LP lamps deliver 90–95% of energy at 254 nm — the peak germicidal wavelength. Lamp output is stable across flow rate variations. Medium-pressure available for very high UV demands.

📊

Validated UV Dose

Validated 30 mJ/cm² (4-log bacteria) and 40 mJ/cm² (4-log virus) configurations with dose-pacing based on inline UV intensity measurement and flow rate. Full validation documentation supplied.

🏥

Sanitary Chamber Design

Double-polished 316L interior with Ra ≤ 0.4 μm. Quartz sleeve isolates lamp from water. Tri-clamp connections for CIP/SIP compatibility. Dead-leg-free flow geometry.

Automatic Intensity Control

UV intensity sensor monitors lamp output continuously. Controller adjusts ballast output or issues change-out alarm when lamp degrades below dose threshold.

🔧

Easy Lamp Replacement

Lamp and quartz sleeve accessed through single end fitting without disconnecting piping. Change-out time < 15 minutes. Standard lamp sizes compatible with Philips, Heraeus, Trojan equivalents.

📋

Compliance Documentation

CE certified. NSF/ANSI 55 Class A compliant configurations available. Full dose validation report for FDA and GMP submissions.

Typical Applications

  • 💧 Drinking Water Disinfection — Final step after filtration in drinking water plants, village water systems, and point-of-use.
  • 🥤 Bottled Water & Beverages — Achieves 4-log pathogen reduction required by NSF/FDA without chemical residuals.
  • 💊 Pharmaceutical Water — Final disinfection step in USP Purified Water and WFI preparation — no DBP formation.
  • 🍺 Brewing & Winemaking — Disinfects process water without chlorine that would interfere with yeast and fermentation.
  • 🐟 Aquaculture — Controls Aeromonas, Vibrio, and pathogens in fish farm recirculating water systems.
  • 💻 Semiconductor UPW — Photocatalytic TOC reduction using high-dose UV (185 nm component) in UPW systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UV kill all pathogens?

At 40 mJ/cm² dose, UV achieves 4-log (99.99%) inactivation of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, E. coli, and most bacteria and viruses. Some viruses (adenovirus) require higher doses. We can design to your target log reduction.

Does UV work on turbid water?

UV effectiveness decreases with turbidity. For best results, water entering the UV sterilizer should have turbidity < 1 NTU and UV transmittance (UVT) > 75%. Pre-filter with multimedia and/or cartridge filter before UV.

How often do UV lamps need replacement?

Typically every 9,000 hours (about 12 months of continuous operation). Replace by hour count, not by failure — lamp output degrades gradually. Our controllers alert at 80% of rated lamp life.

Is UV effective against Legionella?

Yes. UV at 40 mJ/cm² achieves >4-log Legionella inactivation. Combined UV + thermal or UV + residual chlorine provides the most robust Legionella control in building hot water systems.

Lead time?

Standard sizes (1–50 m³/h): 15–25 days. Large industrial units (>100 m³/h): 25–40 days.
