Overview
A multimedia filter is a pressure vessel containing layered filtration media — typically anthracite, silica sand, and garnet — arranged in graded densities to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and sediment from water. Multimedia filters achieve finer particle removal (down to 10–20 μm) with higher dirt-holding capacity than single-media filters, making them the standard pre-treatment ahead of activated carbon filters, softeners, and reverse osmosis membranes.

Technical Specifications
Typical Applications
- 🥤 Beverage & Bottled Water — Removes turbidity from raw water before RO and UV disinfection.
- 💊 Pharmaceutical Pre-treatment — Protects RO membranes in purified water systems.
- 🏭 Boiler Feed Water — Removes suspended solids ahead of softeners and demineralizers.
- 🏘 Drinking Water Treatment — Primary filtration in municipal and rural water plants.
- ♻️ Cooling Tower Make-up — Reduces particulate fouling in cooling water systems.
- 🌱 Agricultural Irrigation — Filters river or surface water for drip and micro-irrigation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a sand filter and a multimedia filter?
A single-media sand filter removes particles to ~30–40 μm. A multimedia filter (anthracite + sand + garnet) removes down to 10–20 μm with 2–3× the dirt-holding capacity per backwash cycle.
How often does the filter need backwashing?
Depends on inlet turbidity: clean municipal water 3–7 days; river/surface water 24–48 hours; heavy turbidity 8–24 hours. Backwash when pressure drop reaches ~0.05 MPa.
What turbidity can this filter handle?
Multimedia filters perform well up to 50 NTU inlet. Above this, we recommend coagulation/flocculation upstream. Outlet turbidity is typically < 1 NTU.
How long does the filter media last?
Properly maintained media lasts 3–5 years. Replacement is straightforward through the top manway.
What is the lead time?
Standard sizes: 20–30 days. Larger or custom configurations: 35–45 days. Containerized for global shipping.
Often Specified Together
Activated Carbon Filters
Water Softeners
RO Membrane Housings
